It's noted in the comments of the post, but it should be noted here as well.
Support for the caret in dependencies comes in npm that ships with node v0.10.16 and up. Dependencies that use the caret will fail to install using npm that comes with node version 0.10.15 and below with Error: No compatible version found: lib@'^3.2.6'.
